How It Works

Advanced analytics and intelligent line sensors work together to enable high probability outage prediction. Outages can be predicted by capturing high resolution waveforms of precursor anomalies. When these anomalies become more frequent, an outage prediction alert is sent to utility planners who quickly inspect the identified overhead feeder segments. System data is utilized to make repairs and/or trim trees to preempt outages.

Key Features

Sentient Energy’s outage prediction solution is powered by the Ample Analytics Platform.  The intelligent MM3ai overhead line sensors detect and capture high resolution waveform anomalies along feeders. These waveforms are sent via cellular communication to the Ample Analytics Platform where advanced analytics are applied to identify anomalies known to precede permanent faults, or precursor anomalies. Outage predictions are made based on frequency and patterns of precursor anomalies.  The outage prediction solution features:

  • Waveform capture at 130 samples per cycle
  • Line-powered sensors on feeders with 10 amps
  • 24-hour continuous sensor operation after outages
  • Cellular public and private LTE (including Anterix)
  • Ample cloud deployment for outage prediction
  • Daily reporting of outage predictions with probability ratings
  • Additional reporting includes harmonics measurements and fault insights

Outage Prediction Benefits

The Sentient Energy data-driven solution for outage prediction enables utilities to go beyond reactive response and proactively address impending outages. Daily reporting of precursor anomaly activity and priority level by feeder segment enables field circuit inspectors to initiate inspections.
